Among the hundreds of eateries in Dhaka, creating uniqueness in the interior design is a challenging task. Setting a tone where the customers will discover new spatial experiences and create associated memories was the foremost consideration. With almost every element used in the design being hand-made on site, the design attempts to create a personal connection with the users.
The owner and architects were in unison in inserting a spacious feel in the interior ambience. The 95-seat capacity restaurant leaves out generous spaces in between tables for privacy. Another major criterion was designing an efficient kitchen, which as per the business plan of the owner, will handle a huge number of take away orders. The owner wished to incorporate unique features like book reading/exchange and wi-fi printing services - facilities that encourage the customers to spend time and use the Bistro as a place which is more than eatery.
Within a space originally designed to house offices, the layout creates separate mood zones with the Breakfast Counter given the prime focus in composition. A variety of table layouts with 2-4-6-8 seats arrangement, including those in the separate smoking zone, create degrees of privacy within the open layout. The Breakfast Counter offers stools for solitary customers. The horizontality of the Counter is countered by the vertical sculptural elements that is a constant reminder about the absence of trees in the landscape of a tropical city. The horizontal-vertical dialectic is also at play with the metal members forming ceiling canopy and the forest of pendants over the counter. With the exception of the tiled floor, toilet and light fixtures, all elements of the interior are handmade on site. Wood, metal angles, concrete and cement plaster are the principal materials
